Rob and Amber's amazing race
S. Indra Sathiabalan

FANS of reality television would probably be familiar with Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich, a couple who have proven that they would do just about anything to win. Mariano, 29, first turned up in the fourth season of the Survivor series - Survivor: Marquesas, where his manipulative attitude and laziness got him kicked out in the middle of the series.

Likewise Brkich, 26, was on Survivor: The Australian Outback and was also kicked out quite early on.

Both Rob and Amber met on Survivor: All Stars where they joined forces to ensure they made it to the final two. Brkich, an administrative assistant, emerged the winner, taking home the US$1 million (RM3.8 million) prize money, with construction foreman Mariano pocketing US$160,000 (RM608,000). Oh, the two had also become romantically involved on Survivor, and were engaged in the results show in front of millions.

Not content to rest on their laurels, Mariano and Brkich decided to take part in another reality show, The Amazing Race 7. Once in, they resorted to their conniving ways to get ahead of the rest. But for all their nastiness, they came in second to the ultimate winners, Uchenna and Joyce Agu.

During a recent tele-conference Mariano and Brkich talked about their experience in the race and their wedding on May 24, which was telecast "live" in the US.

You have to admit that Mariano and Brkich have changed the way the race is run with their constant "looking out for No. 1" at the expense of others. It is a wonder if they still have any friends left after their onscreen shenanigans.

"We had many friends when we started out. As far as The Amazing Race goes, there are still a few people who are our friends. As a matter of fact, Uchenna called us up not so long ago. We are still friends but me and Amber didn't go into the game to make friends," the still cocky Mariano said.

Uchenna had called to congratulate them on their recent wedding.

Some would say that Mariano and Brkich are the real "winners" of The Amazing Race 7, having led most legs of the race, often by a huge margin.

"I think the whole way through the game, we played the game the best. But, in the end, the winners were Uchenna and Joyce," said Brkich pragmatically.

"In our minds, we feel we are the winners because we've still got each other and that is more important that anything else. But you have to hand it to Uchenna and Joyce, they played a hard game and won," said Mariano, who added that he and Amber won US$25,000 (RM95,000) by coming in second, a considerable difference from what he got for second place on Survivor: All Stars.

Unlike previous contestants who bristled at being shown on TV in a less than flattering light, Mariano and Brkich never complained that they were unfairly depicted. As far as everyone was concerned, they were a sly, manipulative couple.

"I have to agree. People say what they say and then they complain about the editing," said Brkich.

"I am completely satisfied with it. I am not going to complain about the way we were edited at all. What viewers must understand was that in that situation it was Amber and me playing a game for a million dollars. We were not there to make friends - we were there to win a game. We were manipulative, we were sly and these things really worked to our advantage. We aren't really all that bad in real life," said Mariano.

"The one thing we learnt from the race is that if you can't get in through one door, try the door at the back, or the one on the side. We always asked and we always looked, no matter what we had been told," Mariano said.

"We always had a back-up plan and another back-up plan and then another back-up plan," Brkich added.

As for the wedding, over 200 friends and family of the bride and groom attended. None of the Survivor or The Amazing Race 7 contestants were invited for the soiree, which was paid for by television station CBS.

On plans for their own reality show, Mariano said several different networks have approached them with the idea for a series that will revolve around their married life.

"At this point, we are thinking about it and we are negotiating. If we do something like that, we want it to be profitable for ourselves and also to ensure that it's a classy show."

Let's hope they will be too busy shooting their new show that they won't have time for TAR All-Stars.
