THIS IS TAR9!

Locals race to survive TV tryouts

Amazing Race, Survivor looking for a few good contestants
By Adam Wise
[email protected]

Not many people, even those from Wisconsin, would eat 4 pounds of meat just out of sheer enjoyment, but you attach a $1 million prize to that, and people line up begging for a chance.

Linda Walby, Fond du Lac, applied Wednesday afternoon to be a contestant on the CBS hit show The Amazing Race along with several hundred other people at The Bar, 606 Lime Kiln Road, Green Bay.

With her partner unable to make the casting call, Walbys friends husband flew to Wisconsin for the audition with her. She believes that may work to her advantage.

I'm supposed to be with his wife, but she couldn't make it so she sent him, Walby said. That's my best friend by proxy. We figure we got a little bit of an angle here.

Amazing Race is a show where groups of two travel around the world taking part in crazy stunts.

Walby said even though she may be hesitant at first to attempt some of them, she wouldn't back down.

Skydiving I think would be a scream, she said. Eating four pounds of meat wouldn't be too exciting, but I'd give it a try and (I'm) not so thrilled about bungee jumping, but I would give it a try.

The Bar hosted a casting call not only for Amazing Race but also for Survivor.

The applicants, who were required to be at least 21 years old, had to bring a completed application, proof of citizenship, and a photograph.

This particular call was one of only 12 being held around the country. But at least one person showed up outside the tavern at 3 a.m. to get in line. According to Monica Zegers, marketing manager for WFRV, Channel 5, the line eclipsed 100 people by 9 a.m.

Zegers believed CBS would be searching for a certain type of person to fill the vacancies in these programs.

People that can articulate really well and be confident with a group of people (will make the best contestant), she said. Someone that has a little something different to bring to the table also helps.

Meanwhile, the popular Survivor casting calls were taking place a mere 10 feet away.

Among those applying for a shot to survive on plain rice at a deserted tropical island was Dawn Baranowski.

A single mom from Green Bay, Baranowski had to be convinced by a friend before she even considered applying and then talked it over with her three kids before making the final decision to go for it.

I've seen the show before. I've watched the people and what they can do and every time I watch it I'm like, I can do it, she said. I'm in the best shape I've ever been and I look at it as a challenge. I just really want to prove to myself that I can do it. Whether I get on it or not, it's just a chance, pretty much of a lifetime.

The auditions for Survivor brought together different kinds of people using different strategies to catch the eye of the producers from CBS.

One man brought a chainsaw to his taping, another decided to wear a backpack while speaking to the camera shirtless. Baranowski decided to just keep it simple.

I gave them my strengths athletic-wise and then I told them my strengths as a person of what I have to offer as being a team leader and a positive focused person, she said.

Zegers informed the participants that if they hadn't heard from CBS by August 8, they wouldn't receive a callback.

Applicants who make it through the second round will then travel to Los Angeles in September for the final auditions. Taping of the shows will last from October through December.

What'd be really cool would be if they had TAR10 and TAR11 showing at the same time. Then, those people keep griping about All-Star editions can shut up and watch TAR11!   Grin
