(Anderson-AP) June 22, 2005 - A former Miss South Carolina and finalist on the CBS reality show The Amazing race is hosting her own version to raise money for a good cause.

Greenville-native Kelly McCorkle is coordinating The Raising Race in Anderson's Amazing Space on August 12th and 13th to raise money for her best friend's memorial fund.

Leslie Mazzara was killed last year in her Napa, California home. The case remains unsolved.

The proceeds from the event will go to construction of a new cottage at Calvary Home for Children named after Mazzara. Cavalry provides long-term care to neglected, abused and orphaned children.

McCorkle says several teams from The Amazing Race will participate, including celebrity couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich. She hopes to raise at least $25,000.

Former Miss South Carolina planning local Amazing Race
After finishing as a finalist on the CBS reality show, The Amazing Race, Greenville native Kelly McCorkle is hosting her own version to raise money for a good cause.

The Raising Race in Anderson's Amazing Space is set for Aug. 12-13 and is being coordinated by the former Miss South Carolina McCorkle to raise money for the memorial fund of her best friend.

Leslie Mazzara, who was Miss Williamston 2002, was killed in 2004 in her Napa, Calif., home. The case remains unsolved.

The proceeds from the event will go to construction of a new cottage at Calvary Home for Children named after Mazzara. Calvary provides long-term care to neglected, abused and orphaned children with an emphasis on keeping siblings together.

McCorkle said Calvary was chosen because Mazzara's platform as Miss Williamston was child abuse awareness and prevention.

McCorkle said her goal is to raise $25,000, but thinks it's possible the event will bring in up to $50,000.

"The building of the cottage costs a half-million dollars," McCorkle said. "This can bring in a lot of money at one time."

She said several of the teams from the Amazing Race will be participating in the Raising Race, including celebrity couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich.

"The celebrity teams will participate in portions of the race," McCorkle said. "We will auction them off so that people can bid on them to have the chance to race with them as partners."

McCorkle said the race will be very similar to the Amazing Race.

"People will be eliminated. They'll have to find the clues, perform the tasks and not get eliminated," McCorkle said. "We'll even break it down into the final teams."

The event will be limited to 100 two-person teams who will compete for prizes and the grand prize - a vacation for two. Teams can get sponsors to pay the $300 entry fee.

McCorkle said more than 500 people have responded.

The event will conclude with a party and concert that will be open to the public.

"If people don't want to run the race they can come meet the celebrity teams at the party and enjoy the concert," McCorkle said.
