Racers Backpacks

I always wonder what sorts of things racers bring with them on the race. Like thy obviously bring clothes and stuff, but what extras do they bring, to make themselves feel at home during the race.

If I was on TAR this is what I would bring in my pack:

~ Sweatpants, althletic pants
~ Sweatshirt
~ Shorts
~ T-Shirts
~ Tank tops
~ Light jacket
~ Hat, gloves, scarf
~ Bathing suit
~ Running shoes
~ 1 pair of Flip Flops for just hanging around at pit stops
~ Bras, Underwear, Socks
~ Deodorant (because being smelly isnt fun)
~ Toothbrush and toothpaste
~ Raser (hairy legs on girls aren't attractive)
~ Face wash, soap, moisturiser, body lotion ( because good skin is always in, even during a race)
~ Baby wipes (for on-the-go freshening up, as well as for toilet use)
~ Chapstick (dry lips aren't cool)
~ Hair brush, hair ties, shampoo, conditioner
~ Plastic bags (for wet and dirty clothes, when there isn't time to wash them)
~ Bag of laundry detergent (racers have said they are allowed to wash clothes at pit stops but must bring their own detergent)

I guess you can all tell that I have no life, and too much time on my hands, to be making up lists like this.  Grin

But anyways, if you were to go on the race, what would you take with you in your backpacks?

Unfortunately, according to some former racers that I have emailed with, there are no electronics allowed on the race.  Sad TPTB inspect the bags prior to the  race starting to make sure that nothing has been smuggled in.  :sneaky: No Ipods, CD players, GPS tracking units, etc.  :yikes: You can, however, bring a compass, a blank notebook (no notes until after the start of the race), knives (obviously), or anything that may give unfair advantage over other teams. If you check the Racing FAQ on Tarflies, it goes into more detail about it.

That IS alot of stuff! Most of the international airlines only allow about 35 lbs as a carry-on.  :weights: They will weigh them if they appear to be more. They also have to fit in an overhead bin too. I have asked alot of questions of people I know in sporting goods business. They recommend purchasing lightweight, nylon-type pants, shirts, etc. They also say that if you layer with the Dri-fit wicking type of fabric undershirts, it is pretty toasty in colder climates. Carrying sweatpants, denim jeans are not practical due to weight when wet. They don't dry very fast either! Could be very uncomfortable!!  :wail:

Yea, all that stuff would be kinda heavy.

One of the racers said in their TARflies interview (i THINK it was Mirna. Not quite sure though) that their backpack weighed 25 pounds!!  Shocked

He may have purchased it after the race began with some of the money that the producers give for each leg of the race. Or he may have borrowed it from someone.

What about sleeping pills? Colin and Christie brought some on the race and it helped with the long airplane flights. It helps you relax.

C/C got their doctor to prescribed them Ambien. I think only prescribed medicines are allowed. (Are some sleeping pills over-the-counter?)

I'll probably pack like C/C. They're bags weren't that big, it looks like a normal big backpack, not like the others which looks like camping bags or something.
