Fans race to meet Phil Keoghan

By Maureen Ryan

No TV fans are more devoted than the followers of "The Amazing Race," which is in its eighth season on CBS.

"TAR" fans mobbed the Borders book store on State Street the evening of Sept. 30 for an appearance by the show's host, Phil Keoghan, who was promoting the release of the first season of the Emmy-winning reality show on DVD.

"We love to travel and it's always fun to watch where they go and see if they're going somewhere we've been, to see something we did," says Chicago's Lindsey Osterhoff, a longtime fan of the globe-trotting reality show.

Osterhoff's husband, Mike, brought her to the event to kick off her 30th birthday celebration. As a special surprise, he had Keoghan hand her a "clue" similar to the ones seen on the show, telling Lindsey where the next part of the celebration would take place. Judging by the look on her face, Osterhoff enjoyed her gift.

"My best friend and I always have our cell phones in hand when we watch the show, we call each other constantly, [saying] `This team's great, that team [is terrible]," she said.

Part of the appeal of the show for Osterhoff and other fans is Keoghan, the one constant in eight seasons of round-the-world travel. Keoghan, a native of New Zealand, is not the typically chatty reality-show host; his relative unflappability and innate charisma are the subject of much online discussion. There's even Keoghan-related "TAR" terminology: True fans refer to the ejection of teams from the race at the end of each episode as "Philimination."

At Borders, fans' devotion to Keoghan was amply rewarded. He spent more than three hours signing DVD sets and his own book, "No Opportunity Wasted"; he even left cell phone messages for the friends of fans and posed for dozens of photos with "TAR" devotees.

Many of the fans present were under 20; "TAR" has always had a strong following among families, which is why Keoghan was intrigued when producers began discussing a family edition of "The Amazing Race," which is airing on Tuesdays.

"I wasn't nervous [about the family edition], because I knew or felt that after seven seasons it would be good to do something a little different, just to mix it up a little bit," Keoghan noted over much-needed coffee after the book signing (he'd been up since 5 a.m.). "And the reality is that the biggest fans of the show are families, so why not let them run the race?

"I think people have a genuine concern with these kids [running the race]," he continued, "but if anything, it's the adults having to deal with crushed egos [that] is the problem. That's the issue."

Some fans have pointed out that the teams appear to be covering less ground this season, which in previous seasons has had contestants travel 60,000 miles or more. "I think in terms of the miles of the race, it might be less than the average," Keoghan says. "But it's not about how far they travel, it's about what they do."
