The Amazing Race 8, Episode 3: These People are Crazy
by Jenn Brasler -- 10/12/2005

The standings get jumbled as the eight remaining families make their way down south. Can the racers handle 3 Gs? Can Wally keep up with everyone else? Who receives possibly the best reward ever? And why does everyone think the Weavers (right) are crazy?

Previously on Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: Nine families headed to Washington, D.C. and played spy games. The Gaghans fell behind, which will happen when you hang around the wrong place for two hours. The Paolos fought, to the surprise of no one. The Rogerses got lost, thanks to some bad navigational skills. A Civil War reenactment gave Wally problems and left the Aiellos in awe. The Weavers came in first but the Rogerses wound up so far in the back of the pack that they were eliminated. And apparently it’s all Brock’s fault. Eight teams remain:

The Gaghans: Tammy, Bill, Carissa, and Billy - Parents and kids/Don’t mess with them

The Paolos: Tony, Marion, Brian, and D.J. - They fight because they… love?

The families are all at Welbourne Manor in Middleburg, Virginia. Will the Bransens be able to overcome Wally’s problems with physical tasks? Will Linda be able to continue to be a leader for her kids? Speaking of the Weavers, they’re leaving first, at 2:26 a.m. Their clue tells them to fly to Charleston, South Carolina, and find a place called the Battery. They’ll search the Battery for a gazebo, where they’ll find their next clue. The family heads towards Dulles Airport. Woo! Dulles! Gotta love that… wacky… okay, look, it’s something familiar. I’m allowed to be excited. Rebecca says that they thought their family was strong and now they’re trying to prove it. They don’t want any drama.

The Linzes leave second. Megan says that she gets frustrated when her brothers don’t listen to her, so she’ll have to make them listen. The Linzes pronounce Dulles “Dulls.” Buzz! Thank you for playing. That would be “DULL-ess.” The Pink Ladies leave third. Sharon says that they haven’t really designated a boss, so she’s kind of stepped into that position.

The Schroeders leave. Char says that Stassi and Hunter are her stepkids and see her as a friend. She’s glad that she hasn’t been branded with the typical negative stepmother stereotype. In the car, Stassi is excited to be going to Charleston, but Hunter says that it’s all historic and he doesn’t know his history. His family tells him to focus.

It’s the Aiellos’ turn to leave. Matt dances a little on the mat. He interviews that they’ve been doing too much “business” and it’s time to make things a little lighter. The Bransens leave, talking about how they’ve proven to be tough. As the Gaghans step up to get their clue on the map, Billy tells everyone to take deep breaths. Tammy says that she and Bill have tried to treat the kids like little adults rather than children who might hold them back. It seems to be working out very well for them.

Out on the highway, the Linzes and the Weavers get stuck behind a truck with a wide load. The Linz brothers are amused. The Bransens take the opportunity to borrow their driver’s cell phone to call for flight information. They find out that one flight arrives in Charleston at 10:06 a.m. The Gaghans call from their car as well and get the same flight info.

The Paolos are the last to leave. Tony says that he came over from Italy as a kid and wants his children to see what an amazing country they live in. This is the chance of a lifetime, no matter how much they fight. Marion says they’re doing the race American style.

The Weavers miss their exit and have to back up. The Linzes see this and laugh. At Dulles, the teams go to Independence Air and the Weavers find a flight that arrives in Charleston at 10:04. The Linzes and Pink Ladies share information, as do the Bransens and Aiellos. The Aiellos and Schroeders get seats on the flight that gets in at 10:04. The Bransens and Gaghans get on the one that arrives at 10:06.

Linda says that she wants to familiarize herself with the airport. I’m not sure why. Stassi thinks that the Weavers are being sneaky. Actually, the Weavers are learning from some employees that they’re on the best flight. Everyone else resents this, for some reason. Have they never seen this show before? This is exactly what they should be doing.

The Aiellos decide to find out how much the Weavers like them by asking them if they got on another flight. The Weavers walk past without responding. The Aiellos are upset about this and talk about they hate the Weavers. Because they wouldn’t share information that might potentially lose them a lead? For shame! I mean, I can see the Aiellos’ position, and that was kind of rude, but it’s a race. There’s no rule that says they have to help anyone. And they didn’t find a better flight, so it’s not like they’re hiding state secrets. The Weavers are playing mind games, and they’re obviously winning.

The Schroeders are also ticked off and say that the Weavers are silent but deadly. The Paolos arrive (the Weavers call them the Cleavers, which rhymes, hee) and ask the Weavers about flights. They tell them which one they’re on and Linda points the Paolos in the direction of a United flight that arrives at 10:38. She tries to make the half hour difference sound like it’s not a big deal.

In the waiting area, Hunter Schroeder and Rolly Weaver are goofing off like typical 14-year-olds. Char thinks this is bad and goes over to ask Hunter what he and Rolly were talking about. They didn’t look like they were talking about anything, and everyone else was around anyway, so Char seems a little paranoid. Also, what do they have to hide? They’re all on the same flight. Plus, if everyone thinks the Weavers got a better flight, Char should let Hunter talk to Rolly and see if he can learn anything. Hunter is upset with his stepmother and, after she leaves, tells Rolly that she’s a word I won’t repeat because my mom might be reading this.

The first two flights leave. The Paolos are left alone in the airport and Marion suggests that they get a map. D.J. says that he’s told his mother that if she weren’t his mom, she’d be his worst enemy. Aww, how lovely. He complains about how annoying her nagging is.

The first flight arrives in Charleston and the families head for cars. Flight #2 lands. The Schroeders find the gazebo first and are rewarded with a detour. This week’s tasks are two typical South Carolina activities. The choices are Forrest Gump and Muddy Waters. Hee, I love this show. In Forrest Gump, teams drive seven miles and board a shrimping boat, where they will dehead a bunch of shrimp. Ooh, yeah, sign me up for that. In Muddy Waters, teams head to Ridgeville, where they’ll drive buggies on a muddy course. Forrest is closer but definitely less attractive. Muddy is further away but could go faster, assuming these teams are good at driving through mud.

The Linzes, Schroeders, and Pink Ladies choose Forrest. The Weavers and Aiellos choose Muddy. The Aiellos note that they wanted to have more fun, and this is their chance. The Shroeders start deheading and Char complains that she has shrimp juice in her socks. Hmm, I can’t say I’ve ever had that problem. In the Linzes’ car, Megan spots a sign and tries to get her brothers to listen to her. One of her brothers (when they’re not looking at the camera, it’s even harder to tell them apart) notes that she might actually be on to something. The other brothers note that they’re doing what Megan wants. It turns out that she’s being helpful, so they can all be quiet.

The Pink Ladies arrive just after the Linzes. The Gaghans find the gazebo and choose Muddy. The Weavers make it to the mud course and Linda takes the wheel. They wind up getting stuck in the mud. The Aiellos arrive and Kevin gets in the driver’s seat. They get close to the finish line but get stuck as well.

The Bransens start deheading, deciding to do two shrimp at a time. The Paolos choose Forrest. Apparently when a family gets stuck in the mud, they have to start over, so the Weavers go for another try. They get stuck again. The Aiellos try again and also get stuck. Get used to this. Matt and David get out of the buggy and traipse through the mud. Well, they got what they wanted – fun. In fact, they think this is more fun than deheading shrimp. Yes, but a root canal is probably more fun than deheading shrimp.

Stassi and Hunter banter on their shrimping boat. Char says that she has to put up with this all the time, but they point out that she usually contributes to the bickering. Tommy Linz kisses a shrimp. What, you think I’d make something like that up? The Pink Ladies are standing across from each other at a table and Christine wonders which side is moving faster. The Bransens are doing very well and think they’ve found their calling. Wally thinks it’s going quickly because they’ll all working. They wonder what the Gaghans decided to do.

The Gaghans are currently getting into a buggy. The kids want to go fast. The Weavers make another attempt. The Aiellos are on their sixth try. Both families get stuck again. The Weavers wonder if this task is actually possible. They decide to switch to Forrest. Very risky. The mid-detour switch hasn’t always worked out for teams in the past.

The Shroeders finish deheading and get their clue. It tells them to go to the Charleston Visitor Center, where they’ll sign up for one of two charter buses. One leaves at 3 p.m. and one leaves at 5 p.m. The bus will take them to a mystery destination. Cue suspenseful music. Char reads that they’re supposed to travel by foot, but, as we shall soon see, they don’t appear to enforce this instruction.

The Linzes and Pink Ladies finish the deheading next. The Paolos decide to do Forrest. The Bransens finish in fourth place. At Muddy, the Aiellos watch as the Gaghans speed through the mud. They’re pretty sure the Gaghans will make it. They do. The Aiellos exclaim that the Gaghans passed them again (referring to being passed on the buggy task in the first episode). Billy tells Bill that he did an awesome job.

The Shroeders head to the visitor’s center. Hunter would like to go slower; his family doesn’t listen. As Megan and the Linz brothers run, Megan says that her heart hurts, which is bad, since she’s only 21. They carry her pack for her. The Linzes arrive at the visitor’s center first, followed by the Shroeders and the Pink Ladies. Those three families sign up for the first charter bus and wonder where Florida is. Oh, well, it’s a state down in… oh. They mean the Weavers. Never mind. The Bransens arrive fourth and join the other three teams on the first bus. Back at Muddy, the Aiellos head out for their 13th try (yikes!) and get stuck again.

David takes over the driving responsibilities and, with some help with rocking the buggy, the Aiellos finally make it across the finish line. The Gaghans drive to the visitor’s center, despite the fact that the clue says to go by foot. But nothing ever comes of this, so whatever. The Paolos finish Forrest and wind up in seventh place. The Weavers, on the other hand, are just starting Forrest. They decide that they should have done this in the first place. The Paolos reach the visitor’s center, followed by the Aiellos. The Weavers finally make it and the last four teams (the Paolos, the Gaghans, the Aiellos, and the Weavers) sign up for the second bus. Linda says that they made a bad decision, but at least they’re grouped with three other teams.

On the bus, Bill exclaims, “We’re all in last place!” Bill strikes me as the kind of guy you want around when things get stressful. It turns out that the mystery destination is Huntsville, Alabama, the “rocket capital” of the U.S. The Bransens make it to the clue box first and learn that they’re headed for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. They are to find the Edward O. Buckbee Hangar to find the next clue. The Linzes arrive second, followed by the Shroeders and the Pink Ladies.

The Bransens find the hangar and get the next clue, a roadblock. Phil explains that some of the roadblocks this season will be done by two people, and this is one of them. Two team members will be placed in a centrifuge used by NASA astronauts and spun around to 3.2 Gs. Phil explains this from inside the centrifuge, which is funny. If the team members can “enjoy” the experience, they’ll get their next clue. A NASA guy explains to the Bransens that astronauts are put in the centrifuge to see how many Gs they can handle. Beth and Lindsay take the roadblock for the family.

The Linzes arrive at the hangar and Megan notes that she came here for space camp in the sixth grade. Outside the centrifuge, everyone watches Lindsay and Beth on a monitor. The Pink Ladies look for the hangar; one of them thinks a hangar is an airplane. The Bransens get their clue, which tells them to walk to Rocket Park and find a Saturn 5 rocket. There, they’ll log onto a computer (using AOL, of course) to get their next clue.

Tommy and Alex take the roadblock for the Linzes. The woman running the centrifuge tells them they’re approaching Earth’s gravity and Tommy says, “Hello, Earth’s gravity!” He says he wants to be an astronaut. He’s probably thinking about what it would be like to fart in space. The Bransens run for the park. The Linzes finish and Mark and Stassi do the roadblock. Mark says that his arm is very heavy. Incidentally, the centrifuge makes people sound like they’re drunk. The Bransens keep running and Beth comments that it’s like being in boot camp. Wally sings, “I don’t know but I’ve been told…” They find the computers and log on to get their clue. In a video, Phil tells them to travel on foot (yeah, that means nothing) to the Space Shuttle Pathfinder, the next pit stop. The last team to arrive “may” be eliminated.

The Linzes get their clue from the computer as well, and it’s a race between them and the Bransens to the pit stop. The Bransens hit the mat first, which is pretty amazing when you consider that they started out the leg in sixth place. Also amazing is what they get for coming in first – free gas for life from BP stations! Best reward ever. You can travel to the Caribbean anytime, but free gas for life is priceless. Beth says that they made a huge jump and Wally says that it’s great to be on top.

The Linzes are second for the second week in a row. They’ve done very well at maintaining that after coming close to getting eliminated on the first leg. On the second bus, the Weavers talk about how tired they are. Linda says that she doesn’t know where they’re going and she feels like a prisoner. The Aiellos aren’t thrilled to be sharing a bus with them. David says that the Weavers keep complaining. Rebecca, laughing a little hysterically, talks about the shrimp deheading.

The bus stops at a Waffle House and the Weaver women head to the restroom. Inside, we can hear Rachel tell Linda that she can’t do this. I think she means that she can’t deal with people who obviously don’t like them. Linda tells her to fake it and pretend they’re happy. They leave the restroom with fake smiles on their faces. Outside, they dance around the parking lot, overdoing it a little. I think the combination of exhaustion and realizing how silly deheading shrimp is has gotten to them. D.J. says the Weavers are nuts and Tammy says, “These people are crazy.”

Rebecca interviews that this situation is bad, but they’ve been through worse. Rachel says she’s trying to take everything as it comes. Back on the bus, the Weavers sing about the never-ending bus ride, to the tune of “The Song that Never Ends.” That would definitely be annoying.

The Shroeders leave the roadblock as the Pink Ladies take their turn. Michelle and Christine do it for their team. Bus #2 arrives in Huntsville and the Weavers wind up reaching the clue in fifth place. The Schroeders get their computer clue and hit the mat in third place. Stassi is happy that they’re moving up in the ranks. The Pink Ladies get their computer clue and arrive at the pit stop in fourth place.

The Weavers reach the hangar and Rolly and Rebecca take the roadblock. The Aiellos and Gaghans arrive; Bill and Billy decide to do the roadblock. The Aiellos realize too late that they have to take a number to get on the centrifuge; they wind up in eighth place. The Weavers get their clue as Tony and Brian do the roadblock for the Paolos. The Weavers get their computer clue and reach the pit stop in fifth place. Way to move up! And not completely go crazy! Phil asks if they’re still unhappy and Linda assures him that they’re fine. She interviews that they are who they are, whether people like it or not. So, am I the only person who likes them? Just wondering.

The Paolos finish and start searching for the computers. Billy and Bill do the roadblock while the Aiellos wait impatiently. The Gaghans finish and David and Matt do the roadblock. The Gaghans start wandering. The Aiellos get their clue. The Paolos are lost and no one listens to Brian. Everyone wanders. Marion and Billy are struggling, but the Aiellos are running. The Paolos reach the computers and Marion says to read the clue slowly. Brian points out that it’s a video. The Gaghans also reach the computers. The Paolos seem to think that the pit stop is in the same area as the computers.

The Aiellos reach the computers as the Paolos start wandering again. The three families all spot the pit stop and start running. The Paolos arrive sixth. I don’t even have the energy to complain anymore. I mean, they make it sixth and leave two of my favorite teams fighting to stay in the race. How many times do we have to see this? Tony hugs Phil as Marion exclaims, “Don’t hug him, he’s full of shrimp!” That’s the rejected title of this recap.

The Gaghans arrive in seventh place. Sadly, the Aiellos are last and are eliminated. They’re pretty good-natured about it and say that the race was fun while it lasted. Phil asks Godfather Tony if the boys are part of the family now. Godfather Tony says that they definitely are. Matt says that they love each other like brothers and love Godfather Tony like a father. Awww! I’m going to miss them. Matt says that they have nothing but respect for each other. Godfather Tony says that the boys are great; he knew that before, but now it’s been reconfirmed and nothing else matters.

Next week: the teams head to a racetrack, which the Weavers don’t appreciate. Just to warn you – I’m not going to go easy on the editors for that next week. The Pink Ladies face a meltdown.
