Ep 5 Recap: Baseball and Birds and Buses, oh my!!

Sorry guys, my recap is kinda long, but I had a lot to write about! This was probably the most exciting episode this season so far!! Grin

And how was that for getting my recap in quickly.  Wink

Previously on The Amazing Race Family Edition, the Linz’ got an eyeful, Stassi broke down, the Paolos came in 2nd (will wonders never cease?) and the Schroeders were eliminated in their hometown of New Orleans. Cry What will happen this week?

Welcome to the beautiful city of New Orleans. Phil tells us that it is famous for jazz, good food and Mardi Gras, and that it was the pitstop on the 4th leg of the race. Will the Weavers strength get them through the next leg, and will the Gaghans get out of last place?

The Bransen family is the first team to depart at 12:40am. They rip their clue, and read out that they are going to Panama City, Panama. One of the blonde sisters tells us that they are excited to leave the country (as are all the viewers). The Paolos leave next at 12:41am and DJ and Mama Paolo immediately start fighting.

The tug-at-your-heartstrings quote of the episode goes to Marion Paolo. She says that “her ideal situation at the end of the race would be for DJ to put his arms around me and say I love you Ma” Awwwwww.

The Linz family departs next at 12:49am. The episode title quote goes to one of the Linz bros saying “we are finally getting out of the country girls!” Don’t worry I refer to my brother as a girl sometimes too. We cut to the 4 Linz siblings smushed into the back of a cab, and think some of them are sitting on each other. Tommy says that he remembers spring break checking out 16 year old girls, but Megan puts him in his place because, duh! They aren’t going to Panama City Florida, but to the actual country of Panama.

The Bransens get into a cab and call the airport to find out which flight, American or Continental gets in first. Apparently the flights are given to them to. Honestly spoon-fed flights!!! These people are smart enough to find their own flights, what the hell were the people-that-be thinking giving them flights!! The most airport drama wee see is the 3 last teams racing to the American counter. Anyways, they find out that Continental gets in first arriving about 3 hours before American.

The Paolos are in their cab and arguing (surprise surprise). Roll Eyes

The Linz’ are at the airport first, closely followed by the Bransens and the Paolos. The Bransens tell them that Continental gets in first, so they all camp out there.

The Desperate Housewives leave next at 1:39am. They start waving madly at the cab and the driver thinks there is something wrong with them (I would too), and asks them if they are all right.

Next go the Weavers at 1:52am. Rebecca says that they are there as a family (no really?) and that she understands alliances and knows that they work but they are stupid  Undecided (last time I checked, when something works, it is pretty smart, not stupid).

The Ghagans leave in last place at 1:54am. Bill tells us that their strategy is just to get ahead of one other team. Umm, that’s a real reach-for-the-top goal. My strategy would be to come in first, but hey, that’s just me.

The final 3 teams arrive at the airport and are all camping out in front of the Continental desk. The desk opens. The Linz’, Bransens and Paolos all get on the first flight, with the Godlewskis, Weavers and Gaghans on the 2nd flight. For some reason I don’t think the first flight was really sold out. It felt like a season premiere episode where they are given flights and told how many spots are on each. But whatever. It doesn’t really matter, because as we see when the first 3 teams arrive at the docks, the boats don’t leave till 7:00am. Can you say major bunchingHuh! I just don’t find it fair that they got on the first flight but now have to wait for all the other teams.

Speaking of the other teams, they arrive at the docks and are relieved to find out they caught up. Al the teams camp out in

I always love when the teams go to Spanish speaking countries. During these cab rides to the docks, we get a taste of the teams Spanish ability. Megan says she loves that one of her brothers speaks Spanish, but when the cab driver talks to them, he has no idea what he is saying. He replies with “los alligatores in la agua?” Papa Paolo goes the “arriba, arriba!” route, and the Bransens go with “rapido por favor” to which the cabbie replies “no problem baby.” Was it just me or did Wally look slightly uncomfortable during that? The Desperate Housewives stick with rapido, while Rolly Weaver must have been brushing up on his Mirnish because he decides to go with “el speedo” (why did that make me think of the season 6 water polo detour with the guys in Speedos?).

Anyways, the docks open up at 7:00 and the teams file onto their boats. The Linz family apparently got a really slow boat because 3 other teams pass them. The Gaghan’s boat driver wants to stop to pick up someone else but they persuade him to drop them off first. During the boat ride, there is an endless supply of, “Andale!” “Rapido!” and “Vamanos!”

The teams reach the Island and one by one find Ricardo Diaz. Shouldn’t he be doing something science related instead of lounging in a hammock? The teams find a detour, Rhythm or Coos? In Rhythm they have to go to a neighborhood, find a bunch of instruments and deliver them to a music restaurant. In Coos they have to go to a bird watching park, find 5 wooden birds and circle them on a chart. There is also a Fast Forward in their envelope however, and the Gaghans and the Paolos decide to go for it. They have to go to a pier and perform a tandem bungee jump off a crane. The Linz’ and the Godlewskis do Rhythm and Weavers and Bransens do Coos. They all file onto their boats and go back to the mainland, where they get onto their cool red buses. Billy Gaghan says that the bus “is much better than my school bus.” Mine too Billy. Rolly Weaver says that it is a pimp bus. That it is. On the way to the park, the Bransens pick up a lady who will direct them to the park. But she just ends up getting them to drop her off at work. Also, the Godlewskis and the Linz’ form an alliance to get rid of team Florida.

The Gaghans and the Paolos arrive at the Fast Forward and race to get to the crane first. Tammy falls into a parked car (Ouch!), and the Paolos get there first. Papa and Brian go first and they look like they have the time of their lives. Brian his clutching on to his Dad like he’s an 8 year old boy. The problem comes with DJ who is scared of heights. He doesn’t want to do it, but his family convinces him. He ends up jumping (screaming like a little girl the entire time), and the Paolos get the Fast Forward. DJ even gives his mom a kiss while they are in the air. Awwwwww. They are actually starting to grow on me. They make their way to the pitstop, while the Gaghans see that they have done the Fast Forward and go to do the Rhythm detour.

The Weavers arrive at the park and start looking for birds. After they get 5, they find out that they are wrong and go to do it again. The Bransens arrive and look for birds as well. The Weavers finally get all their birds and leave, on the way to a baseball stadium. The Bransens finish soon after and leave as well.

Meanwhile the Linz’ and the Desperate Housewives get to the Rhythm detour and start picking up instruments. They have decided to work together, which pretty much means the brothers carry almost everything, and Tricia Godlewski makes out with them afterwards.

The Paolos arrive at the pitstop in first place. They win a trip to Panama. Why would you want a trip to Panama when they are already there? But according to Papa, they are going to enjoy Panama. Phil asks them if they ever thought they would go bungee jumping with their parents, to which they reply that they don’t even like going out to eat with their parents. Maybe this will be a turning point for them and they will be able to work together. Who knows, miracles do happen.

The Gaghans arrive and start the detour, getting the help of a local. The Linz’ and Godlewskis finish the detour and get on the bus to the stadium. The Weavers arrive first and find a Roadblock. One team member has to get a base hit or homerun against a little league pitcher, but they only get 3 pitches each time. Rolly goes up to bat, but gets stuck out on his first turn. The Bransens arrive and Beth takes her turn. She strikes out as well. The Linz and Godlewskis arrive. Rolly goes back up and hits it this time. However, Linda thinks that the Linz brothers were being to rude to him and tells him to hush and encourage everyone. Right, like you were encouraging their boat driver? Anyways the Weavers make their way to the pitstop.

The Gaghans finally finish the detour and go the stadium. Beth Bransen hits the ball and they go off to the pitstop as well. Nick Linz goes up and cracks it out of their on his first pitch. The Linz leave for the pitstop. Sharon Godlewski goes up next but misses. The Gaghans arrive and Papa Bill does it. Billy tells us his dad is a good player, and apperently he is because he hits it out on his first try as well, and the Gaghans make their way to the pitstop. The Desperate Housewives are left and Sharon is having trouble hitting. One of the sisters tells her to “imagine it’s that boss that wouldn’t give you a raise” and Sharon miraculously hits it. They get onto their bus and are off.

The Weavers arrive at the Pitstop 2nd, and after them, the Bransens check in. The Linz are 4th. The Gaghans check in soon after in 5th.

The Godlewskis feeling it is a non-elimination decide to put on as many clothes as possible. We see underwear over bathing suits, underwear over pants, bras over t-shirts, and much more. Tricia says she is wearing 3 bras. She is also wearing like 5 pairs of underwear over her pants. We even see the sisters putting on winter jackets and gloves. Why would you need a jacket and gloves on a summer race?

They arrive at the pitstop and can barely walk up the stairs from the amounts of clothing they are wearing. They are told it is a non-elimination and Phil takes all their money and possessions. He asks them if they know how ridiculous they look and they say of course they do. If they didn’t then lord, what must be wrong with them. He also tells them that in Panama it is illegal to wear underpants, on top of underpants on top of your pants. Phil can’t even stop himself from breaking into laughter. I can’t blame him. Me and my mom were rolling on the floor laughing. :laff: I mean, what was that black net thing on top of one of the sister’s heads? It looked like one of Bolo’s stocking skull caps from season 6. The sisters say that they are beautiful and will be able to get money from people and I’m sure they will, especially if Tricia agrees to make out with one of the Linz’.

Next week, the teams go into the rainforest, and the Weavers’ car gets stuck in grass (stuck in grass?)  Huh

That was a really good re-cap.  It was good to hear your little inside comments thrown in there for good measure.  Hilarious pictures as well.  At first, I thought Phil was going to just take the money, and all the trouble the Godlewskis went through to pile on extra goes would be for naught, but I guess it was worth it.  It gave us all a good laugh.
