The Amazing Race 8, Episode 8: "If You Live, Let's Go Out!"
by Jenn Brasler -- 11/24/2005

The Weavers (right) wind up accidentally taking the scenic route and seeing more of Utah than they can stomach. At least we get to see a lot of pretty views. Will the Weavers’ mistake cost them the race? Will the Linzes finally fight their way to first place? And which racer gets asked out by a random person on a ski slope?

Previously on Why Can’t We Be Friends?: Five families raced to Costa Rica, where Tony Paolos ran into problems of the watery kind. He survived, of course, and wound up singing on the detour. The Linzes gained a lead on the trip back to the United States, but the Pink Ladies, who started out in last place, grabbed an earlier fight and wound up in first. In Arizona, team members rode Super Karts around a track, which made the Weavers nervous. The Pink Ladies came in first and the Bransens came in last but, fortunately, weren’t eliminated.

In the next leg, team members flew planes in loops. The Paolos ran into a number of problems, including navigational difficulties. The Weavers annoyed the Pink Ladies and ticked off the Linzes. During a detour that involved more water, the Linzes pulled ahead, but getting lost cost them first place yet again. The Pink Ladies retained the lead and the Paolos were eliminated. Four families remain:

The Godlewskis (“Pink Ladies”): Michelle, Christine, Tricia, and Sharon - Sisters/I honestly can’t believe they’re still in this

The Linzes: Alex, Megan, Tommy, and Nick - Siblings/I think they’ll go all the way

The Weavers: Linda, Rolly, Rebecca, and Rachel - Mother and kids/The less said about them, the better

The Bransens: Wally, Lauren, Beth, and Lindsay - Father and daughters/Possible silent threats

The teams are in Lake Powell, Arizona. Will the Weavers’ alienation affect their racing? Will the Linzes finally get out of second place? The Pink Ladies are the first to leave, at 5:45 a.m. To quote Lorelai from Gilmore Girls, they have one of those in the morning now? The clue tells them to travel 136 miles to Monument Valley, Utah, where they will have to find John Ford’s Point, named after a filmmaker who made the area famous in old Westerns. Christine interviews that she thought she and her sisters would talk a lot and bond, but she’s the one who’s doing all the talking. Okay, she didn’t say that, but that’s what’s going on. Christine notes that she may have been fooling herself. Sharon complains about Christine’s talking and wonders if she has a word quota she has to reach every day. The sisters note that their new form of transportation will be a camper.

The Linzes leave second. They say that they keep expecting to land in first. I thought about introducing a drinking game where you drink every time someone says “first,” but you’d all be drunk by the second page of this recap. Tommy says that every time they fall behind, they just want first place more. They try to convince themselves that this is the leg where they’ll come in first. As they get in the camper, they say that this is another chance to win. The Linzes note that the Pink Ladies are going in a different direction on the highway, probably because they need gas.

The Weavers are the third to leave. Rebecca says that they’re not naïve about where they stand among the other families. Rachel says that everyone is against them. Linda says that they can’t let it bother them. In the Linzes’ camper, they say that they keep jinxing first place. Linda tells her kids that they need to just have fun. Rachel says that they’re not thinking about what the other teams are doing and, in fact, they don’t care.

The Pink Ladies fuel up and get a map. Christine is talking. Tricia tells her to be quiet. The Bransens leave and Wally notes that when there were more teams around, they could be more cautious with their racing because they could rely on the others to screw up. Now, though, they need to race more aggressively. Would you really want to win a race just because everyone screwed up more than you? The Linzes pass a sign and wonder if it was something they should have followed. With four people in the car, you’d think one person would be paying attention. They decide not to turn around. The Weavers are happy that they’re in front of the Pink Ladies. The Pink Ladies, of course, are not happy.

The Linzes get worried about where they’re going and decide to ask for directions. They learn that they did pass their turn. The Weavers pass the turn as well. The Pink Ladies do the same but realize their mistake and start to turn around. The Weavers see them turning around. Christine helps Sharon turn, shrieking the whole time. Christine would definitely get on my nerves, too, if I were stuck in a camper with her for a couple of hours. Her sisters say that she’s crazy. The Weavers turn their camper around. As the Pink Ladies are backing up, Christine sees the Weavers approaching. On the Linzes’ way back, they pass the Weavers.

In the Bransens’ camper, Beth says that they’ve noticed the tension between the Pink Ladies and Weavers and hope that it will benefit them. Wally says they’re neutral, like Switzerland. Always smart. The Weavers arrive at John Ford’s Point. The Pink Ladies park. The Linzes park. All three teams run. The Weavers reach the clue box first and receive a clue that tells two members to take a helicopter ride to Elephant Butte, a big rock summit. The copter will take two teams up at a time. What isn’t clear is that the teams have to pull numbers to determine what order they’re going in. The Weavers pull number 1, and though the Linzes get their clue second, they don’t pull a number. The Pink Ladies grab number 2 before the Linzes realize their mistake and get number 3. They’re unhappy that they screwed up.

Rebecca and Rolly will be doing the task for the Weavers, and Michelle and Christine will be going for the Pink Ladies. Neither family talks to the other in the chopper. The teams get their clues and get back in the copter. On the ground, the other Pink Ladies tell the Linzes that they overshot the turn. They hope that there’s a Yield coming up. The Pink Ladies assure the Linzes that they have a deal - whoever reaches the Yield first will yield the Weavers.

After the copter lands, the teams read the clues, which tell them to travel 180 miles to Moab, Utah. There, they will find a rock formation called Gemini Bridges. Linda helps Rebecca back the camper out. There’s a lot of footage of people backing up campers this week. It’s about as thrilling as it sounds. The Pink Ladies are upset that the Weavers have slipped ahead of them.

Nick and Alex take the copter ride for the Linzes, enjoying the scenery. They get the clue and leave. The Bransens finally arrive and Beth and Lindsay take the ride. “And we thought the view was good from the ground,” Beth says appreciatively. They grab their clue, land, and leave, noting that they have a lot of catching up to do. In the Weavers’ car, the family complains about Utah. One of the girls says that whoever said the world was overpopulated must be from Utah, because there’s a lot of empty land there. I’m too tired to think of a comeback.

The Linzes spot the Weavers, note how slowly they’re driving, and pass them, yelling about going fast. Rolly agrees that they’re driving too slowly. The Linzes have a wonderful nickname for the Weavers - the Wicked Witch of the East and her three little monkeys. I’d adopt that but it’s too long to type over and over. They make some Wizard of Oz jokes. The Bransens say that they’re up for anything on this leg. Wally jokes that he’d like to do something tranquil and boring. The Pink Ladies are fairly quiet (for them, at least) in their car. They look very tired.

The Linzes reach Gemini Bridges first and grab the next clue, a detour. The choices are Ride Down and Drop Down, or, as I like to call them, Bikes and Yikes. In Bikes, teams ride bikes six miles into a canyon. (Take a moment and remember Flo’s helmet-throwing hissyfit in season 3 and Nicole’s complete inability to ride a bike down a ski slope in season 5. Ahh, good times.) In Drop Down, teams rappel 270 feet into a canyon. The Linzes quickly decide to rappel.

At the edge of the cliff they’re rappelling off of, Megan decides not to look down. Good plan. Tommy starts off. Alex and Nick joke that if they lose a family member, it’ll be him. “God rest his soul,” says Nick. Alex says that they’ll just turn around and ride bikes. I wonder if I like them more because I’ve turned against the Weavers or because they’re getting funnier. Maybe it’s a little bit of both.

In the Weavers’ car, Linda teaches her children something new - a lot of Mormons live in Utah. Did they really not know that? The Weavers arrive at the detour and choose Bikes. They think it’ll be fun, and Linda says that she’s always wanted to ride bikes with her kids. Okay, that’s sweet. Megan rappels, declaring it “awesome.” Back at the Bikes, Rebecca is struggling and starts walking. Rolly announces that they won’t be able to do this task.

Fortunately for the Weavers, Rebecca gets back on her bike. Alex rappels, followed by Nick. Rebecca is still struggling and comments that she doesn’t think even Lance Armstrong could do this. The Bransens arrive and choose Yikes. Wally hopes he can do it. The Linzes finish rappelling as the Bransens get ready to start. Nick finishes and the Linzes all express how much they loved rappelling. Beth starts rappelling. Wally says that he’s afraid of heights, but his daughters want this experience and he wants them to have it, so he’ll do it. Aw! What a great dad.

The Linzes get the next clue, which tells them to go to Green River State Park, where they’ll be spending the night. Their departure time in the morning will depend on what time they arrive at the park. Elsewhere, Rachel complains some more about Utah. Sorry you have to be bombarded by such pretty scenery. Wally rappels and Beth finishes up. The Pink Ladies arrive at the detour as Phil voices over that, due to a production error, their car battery was drained. They received a replacement vehicle but they’re now in last place. That’s not going to make them very happy. The Pink Ladies pick Yikes.

Wally finishes rappelling, glad to be done. Michelle starts rappelling. Lauren finishes as Lindsay starts. Sorry I can’t make this more interesting. The Weavers, all exhausted, reach the clue box. Michelle and Lindsay finish rappelling. The Pink Ladies tell each other to pick up the pace. Christine starts and immediately falls. Sharon figures that hurrying isn’t really an option now. Christine and Tricia rappel. The Bransens get their next clue and are happy that they’ve made up some time. Sharon rappels. Tricia finishes. Sharon finishes.

The Linzes arrive at the park, happy to be in first place. They’re told that they’ll be leaving at 7:00 the next morning. The Weavers are next and will be leaving at 7:15 a.m. The Bransens, third, will leave at 7:30 a.m. The Pink Ladies, who stopped somewhere to get drinks, will leave at 7:45 a.m. They want to stay optimistic. That night, the Linzes play on the beach while the Weavers mope around their camper. They talk about how they’re alone in this and they won’t be rude but will just stay to themselves. Linda interviews that they’ve tried to talk to other racers but they don’t reciprocate. In the camper, she says that she hates this.

At 7:00 a.m., the Linzes leave. Their clue tells them to drive 20 miles to Heber City and find Bart, who will give them their next clue. They don’t know that Bart is a bear - specifically, a 1,100 pound trained grizzly bear. The Linzes spot a waterfall, which seems to put Megan in awe. She’s definitely enjoying this leg of the race. The waterfall makes one of the brothers want to go fly-fishing. Of course, the Weavers aren’t appreciated the scenery.

The Bransens leave, followed 15 minutes later by the Pink Ladies. The Pink Ladies read in their clue that they can’t run or yell when they reach the property where they’ll see Bart. Michelle notes that it’s bad for them that those two things are forbidden. Heh. Michelle is my favorite Godlewski, and not just because she’s the only one I can recognize as soon as I see her. The Linzes pull over to ask for directions; their conversation goes like this: “Ask this lady.” “That’s a dude.” I love unintentional hilarity. The Weavers also get directions.

Once again, the Linzes arrive in first place. They’re sent to the backyard of a house, where they get a glimpse of Bart. Megan is especially shocked. The boys do Yogi Bear impressions. Their clue tells them to travel 22 miles to the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, where the 2002 Olympics were held. They are informed that there is a Yield ahead. The Linzes thank Bart and take off. On their way to see Bart, the Weavers spot the Linzes and duck in their camper. Yeah, because the Linzes won’t recognize the camper. Megan announces that they can’t make any mistakes on their way to the park.

The Bransens get directions. The Weavers reach Bart, calling him “cool.” They’re worried when they learn that there’s a Yield coming up. The Bransens arrive as the Weavers leave. The Weavers check their map and choose a road which happens to be different from the one the Linzes chose. They heckle some bikers on the road. The Bransens see Bart, who they think is cute. They leave, taking the same road as the Linzes. The Pink Ladies are next to see Bart, reminding each other not to run or yell. They get their clue and take the same road as the Linzes and Bransens. Christine wonders if any of the other families went back to the Interstate, but her sisters tell her not to worry about it.

Linda notes that the Weavers’ road has turned into the scenic route. They’re worried that they won’t arrive first and will get yielded again. The Linzes reach the Yield (which Phil tells us is the last one in the race) and, of course, yield the Weavers. They say that it’s because they want to put some more distance between them and possibly, finally come in first. The clue is a roadblock - one team member will ski down a 60-foot ramp into a pool of water. Nick takes it for the Linzes and Tommy hopes he won’t show off.

The Bransens arrive at the Yield, surprised that the Weavers aren’t there yet. Lindsay takes the roadblock for the team. Nick does his jump, flipping and landing face-first in the water. His brothers and sister heckle him and Megan yells, “How does that face feel?” Their next clue sends them to the Salt Lake City Public Library, the next pit stop. The last team to arrive “may” be eliminated. The Pink Ladies arrive at the park as the Linzes are leaving. The Linzes yell to them that they yielded the Weavers and they’re not there yet.

Christine takes the roadblock for the Pink Ladies. Wally watches Lindsay ascend the slope and says that he’d be scared if he were doing it. A boy on the slope starts yelling something at Lindsay and one of the safety guys tells her not to listen. “If you live, let’s go out!” the boy yells. Hee. Lindsay successfully completes her jump and the Bransens leave. I hope she at least got that guy’s number. If nothing else, she’d have a great story to tell later. Christine does her jump and the Pink Ladies leave, wondering where the Weavers are. They hope they get eliminated. The Weavers are still on their scenic route, upset because they’re obviously not on the right road. Linda says that they just have to accept that they’ll be eliminated.

The Weavers keep driving. Rachel says that they’re the last nice family left. Ha! Define “nice.” She says that people who win the race probably spend the money on nose jobs and breast implants. Shut up, all of you. Yes, you, too, Rolly. The Linzes wonder if Bart ate the Weavers. Yeah, they’re definitely getting funnier. The Bransens are still wondering where the Weavers are. The Pink Ladies are surprised that they’re still in the race. They wish that they could have seen the Weavers’ reactions to being yielded.

The Weavers have stopped at McDonald’s to get some food. Linda says that ice cream is great for cheering people up. They arrive at the park and run to the Yield mat, food in hand. They cheer when they see that they’ve been yielded. I’m having flashbacks to the Waffle House parking lot. They sit down on the mat to eat. Linda says that they knew this was coming because “two teams” were rude to them. She doesn’t seem to care.

The Linzes get directions. Megan notes that someone else might have passed them, so they might not still be in first. The Bransens find the library on their map. The Linzes and Bransens both approach the library, but it’s the Linzes who reach it first. Yay! One of the boys thinks that the greeter is Miss Utah. (She’s wearing a crown, so, good guess.) Nick says, “Miss Latin Utah, even better.” Phil officially tells the Linzes they’re in first, then jokes that they don’t get a prize. In fact, they’ve won a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. If I were them, I’d be ticked - I mean, Wyoming borders Utah. It’s like the Paolos winning a trip to Panama while they were in Panama. But the Linzes are happy about the trip, probably because they can go skiing. Phil adds that they’ve gotten a woman for Tommy. He asks if the Linzes are ready to go all the way; they are.

The Bransens hit the mat second. Yay again! Good for them. They’re very happy. The Pink Ladies are third. Phil asks if they know what happened with the Yield; they confirm that they do. He asks how Christine’s sisters feel about her. Michelle checks her watch and notes that Christine hasn’t made her word quota for the day. Christine interviews that she’s backed off of talking so much and will continue to do so.

The Weavers count down their Yield timeout and Rolly does the roadblock. The family is ready for elimination. Hmm, so am I. They reach the library, stating that this was the worst day ever. They’re in fourth place, of course. “Really?” they joke. Fortunately (?) for them, this is a non-elimination leg. The Weavers give a half-hearted, “Yay.” Oh, just go home if you don’t want to be here. Rolly complains to Phil that no one likes them. Phil totally doesn’t care; he takes their money and possessions. He notes that they don’t seem to have a hunger to win anymore. Rebecca says that they’ve had it in the past. Linda says it’s not worth the personal stuff going on in the race.

Phil gives the family a pep talk, telling them that people can come back from last place and win. Linda interviews that Phil’s talk helped. It would be amazing for them to come back from this. They’re no longer willing to leave - now they’re ready to win. Bleh.

Next week: Hot air balloons! The Bransens and Linzes collide. The Weavers confront the Linzes about the Yield. Linda says that they’ll be sorry they wasted the Yield. Except they didn’t, since it was the last one in the game. So… be quiet, Linda.
