The Amazing Race 8, Episode 9: The Old and the Faithful, the Young and the Obnoxious
by Jenn Brasler -- 11/30/2005

The race is down to four families, so it’s time for them to really show their strengths and work together as teams. How can Wally finally show his worth? What task is perfectly-suited to the Weaver girls? Can the Linzes (right) keep their lead in the midst of intense competition? And just how much should we depend on a supposedly reliable geyser?

Previously on My Family Went to Utah and All I Got was This Bad Attitude: Four families left Lake Powell, Arizona for Monument Valley, Utah. Rocks! Rappelling! A bear! Weaver trouble! The Linzes yielded the Weavers, and the Weavers were the only people unhappy about it. The Linzes finally pulled out a first-place arrival, and though the Weavers were last, they were saved by a non-elimination leg. Their money and possessions, however, weren’t so lucky. Four families still remain:

The Linzes: Megan, Tommy, Nick, and Alex - Sister and brothers/My pick to win

The Bransens: Wally, Lindsay, Lauren, and Beth - Father and daughters/Pretty consistent

The Godlewskis (Pink Ladies): Michelle, Sharon, Christine, and Tricia - Almost indistinguishable

The Weavers: Linda, Rolly, Rachel, and Rebecca - Mother and kids/I wish they’d just quit last week

The teams are in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is very pretty, no matter what the Weavers tell you. Speaking of the Weavers, they’re broke. Will the Linzes stay in first place? One can only hope. The Linzes are leaving first, at 12:46 a.m. Their clue tells them to drive to Park City High School. Megan doesn’t feel well. She interviews that having three brothers on her team is an advantage, partly because she gets spoiled. Indeed, they’re letting her relax in their car because she doesn’t feel well. She loves being the only girl, though one of her brothers thinks she might be getting sick of them.

The Bransens leave next, mentioning that they have $87 for this leg of the race. Beth repeats what she said last week about the Weavers and Pink Ladies fighting. Wally says again that he thinks it’s too their advantage. The Bransens think they’re doing a good job of staying on task. I agree. I think they’ve been the most consistent of all of the teams this season. The Pink Ladies leave third and Christine repeats what she said last week about thinking that they would get along better than they actually are. What’s with the repeating clips? They’re giving me déjà vu. Christine isn’t happy that her sisters are giving her a hard time. Aww, she’s just an easy target, that’s all. Trust me. That’s why I used to get harassed by my brothers all the time. (Oh, wait, I still do.)

The Linzes arrive at the school. Their next clue tells them that they’ll have to inflate a hot air balloon and take a ride over the Utah countryside. Shuttles to the balloons will be leaving every ten minutes starting at 6 a.m. The Linzes decide to get some sleep in their camper. Tommy recites the “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” prayer and we get a close-up of some Pepto Bismol by Megan’s bed. The Bransens arrive, followed by the Pink Ladies.

The Weavers leave last. Linda says that being yielded a second time was a low moment for them. As low as almost quitting? She says that they’ve never been treated like this. Yeah, I get the feeling that no one’s ever called them on their behavior before. Rachel says that they’ve overcome a lot, so they’ll get past this. The Weavers get directions.

The Linzes get up at 5:30 and Megan is feeling better. The Weavers arrive as the Linzes are getting ready to leave; they’re happy that people are still there. They start laughing that the Linzes’ Yield didn’t work. Yeah, but it would have if it hadn’t been a non-elimination leg. The Weavers are also happy that the shuttles don’t leave until 6 a.m., so they haven’t lost a lot of time. They brag that they got to sleep in beds last night. Linda tells the Linzes that they’ll be sorry they wasted their Yield. Like I said last week, it wasn’t a waste since it was the last one. The waste would have been not using it at all. One of the Pink Ladies says Linda is a psycho.

The Linzes tell the Weavers that they thought they were right behind them. They’re not sorry about using the Yield. The Weavers are happy that they got to say what they wanted to. Yeah, because they’re always censoring themselves. The Linzes get in their shuttle, talking about how weird the Weavers are. They joke that they’re not like “us Midwesterners.” Megan notes that Linda doesn’t seem like a mom. Thank you! One of the brothers says that no one likes to be yielded in life.

The Bransens get in their shuttle. The Linzes arrive at the balloons. The Pink Linzes get in their shuttle. I just love travel montages. They’re so thrilling. The Linzes inflate their balloon as the Bransens arrive. The Pink Ladies aren’t far behind and are surprised to see how big the balloons are. They get theirs ready as one counts, “1, 2, 3, 4.” “4?” one sister echoes, confused. One to grow on, I guess. The Weavers arrive and Linda says that they need to beat the “snotty little ladies,” i.e. the Pink Ladies. Yeah, I just can’t see why people don’t realize they’re the last nice team in this race.

The Linzes are ready and up they go. The Bransens watch them and Lindsay says that she loves “Bone” (Tommy). Rolly is being dragged by one of the ropes attached to the Weavers’ balloon. The Bransens and Pink Ladies take flight, followed by the Weavers. Flying montage. The Linzes’ balloon is nearing the Bransens’ and the boys wonder if they’re going to collide. The balloons get so close to each other that they’re touching. The Weavers are in awe. The balloons pass each other without incident. The Weavers’ pilot says that they were lucky.

Over in the Pink Ladies’ balloon, Michelle notes that she used to be afraid of heights but the race has cured her of that. Rolly is nervous about the sturdiness of the wicker basket. You think that’s scary? The track on the Avalanche roller coaster at Kings Dominion looks like it’s made of wicker.

The Linzes land and get their clue. It tells them to drive 14 miles to Heber Valley Railway, where they’ll search for their next clue. The Bransens land as well. In the Linzes’ car, they note that the balloon ride was quite a way to start out the day. The Pink Ladies land on some rocks. The Weavers are nearing the ground and note that they’re over a road. They wind up landing on a hill, wondering if that’s normal. They’re laughing nervously and screaming about tipping over.

The Weavers say that they crashed (whatever) and demand their clue from their pilot. How nice. They get out and slide down the hill. The Linzes reach the railroad and are greeted by a detour. Their choices are Spike It and Steam It. In Spike It, teams finish 20 feet of railroad by putting down tracks and hammering in spikes. This isn’t exactly demanding but requires precision. In Steam It, teams load hundreds of pounds of coal into a train. It doesn’t take much skill, but that’s a lot of coal. The Linzes choose Spike It.

The Bransens reach the detour and one of the girls (Lindsay, I think) isn’t sure what precision means. They choose Spike It anyway. The Linzes are doing well, though Megan decides she’d be more of a help by staying out of the way and playing cheerleader. The Pink Ladies arrive and pick Spike It. Detour montage! Sharon yells at Christine. Christine is offended and thinks she’s being treated by an animal. What are siblings for if not to yell at you like you’re a disobedient dog?

Here are the Weavers. They pick Steam It, thinking it’ll be easy. Apparently they’re not wrong because they get right to it and look like they’re doing well. Lindsay Bransen gets clocked in the head with something (ouch!) but decides to keep working. Speaking of working, Christine Godlewski is singing, “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.” Wally takes over for the Bransens, able to get more done than all three girls combined. He interviews that it was his time to shine. Megan Linz reveals that she did find a job - tightening the bolts.

The Weavers are still doing well. Their method consists of Linda and the girls getting the buckets and taking them to Rolly, who dumps them in the train. This means that Rolly (who has to climb a ladder to reach the place where he dumps the coal) doesn’t have to run back and forth with the others. Back at Spike It, Christine complains that this is taking forever. Her sisters tell her to be quiet. The Linzes think they’re done, but their spikes aren’t all touching the rail, so they have to fix those. They finally finish and get their next clue. It tells them to drive 148 miles to the Bonneville Salt Flats and look for a sculpture called the Tree of Utah. (There’s a pretty good picture of it here. Looks like tennis balls on a hat rack to me.)

In the Linzes’ car, Alex jokes that he’s going to build his own railroad. There’s a joke about strokes that I won’t repeat. It pretty much writes itself anyway. The Bransens finish and once they’re back in their car, the girls praise Wally for doing such a good job. Lauren admits that she’s not sure she actually did anything. The Weavers and the Pink Ladies are both finishing up. Michelle is upset with Christine’s methods. The Weavers finish and are happy to be in front of the “lovely sisters.” The Pink Ladies tighten their bolts and bicker. They wonder why they chose this task and decide that it was Christine’s fault. Hey, it’s not like they had to follow her lead. They finally finish.

In the car, the Pink Ladies ask again why they chose Spike It. Christine is upset about being blamed and starts crying. She tells her sisters to leave her alone. Michelle growls hilariously at her. I feel a little sorry for Christine, but that was funny. Christine doesn’t want to talk to anyone.

Christine complains that she doesn’t get the kudos she thinks she deserves. She does her best, and if the others can’t see how awesome she is, that’s their loss. I do admire her attitude about this. The Linzes head to the Tree of Utah and Megan asks if it’s a tree of balls. The clue at the box tells them to go to Bear Lake Rendezvous (which one brother can’t pronounce) Beach in Garden City. The Bransens approach, calling the tree a Tree of Hemorrhoids. The Weavers arrive in third. The Pink Ladies spot the tree and declare that it’s not a tree. They see something lying nearby (a part of the sculpture? I’m not sure) and one says, “It fell down and went boom.” Hee.

Phil pipes up to tell us that the teams are traveling 400 miles to Bear Lake Rendezvous State Park. Like last week, they will depart based on the time they arrive. The first team to arrive will leave at 8:30 a.m. and the other teams will leave every 15 minutes afterward. The Bransens arrive first. Rebecca asks for help navigating; her brain is fried like she’s been in math class all day. She admits that she failed math twice. So many jokes. The Weavers are second and decide that this is a good time to get some money. They do some begging and wind up with both money and a map.

The Pink Ladies are third. The Linzes finally arrive in last, due to a production error. Apparently their cameraman drained their battery, too. I think someone needs to have a talk with these cameramen. Megan says that even if this is the end for them, they’re still having fun.

In the morning, the Bransens are the first to leave. Their clue tells them to travel 137 miles to Dunham Ranch in Big Piney, Wyoming. ‘Bye, Utah! In the car, Wally is studying a map and tells the girls he’s trying to get “refamiliar.” They laugh at him. The Weavers leave, happy about the map they “found.” Can it really be found if someone handed it to them? The Pink Ladies leave and Christine says that she doesn’t feel well. Someone thinks that’s “convenient.” Huh?

The Linzes leave last, noting that they need to get in front of someone - it doesn’t matter who at this point. Megan says that it’s nothing new to be surrounded by boys. Why do they have her keep talking about this? We get it! Nick annoys her in the car and she says (to the camera guy, I think) that it’s obvious that the guys can be obnoxious. The Bransens reach Dunham Ranch and are happy to see horses. The next clue is a roadblock, and this one will be completed by two people. They will have to drive six cattle a quarter of a mile on horseback. Beth and Lauren will be doing it for their team.

Lauren’s horse is having some issues (I don’t think she’s ever ridden before) but she’s having fun. The girls’ cowboy gives them some tips. Beth starts buttering up the cows, calling them pretty. You never know what might work, I guess. They’re doing pretty well. The Weavers arrive and are happy about the horses because Rebecca loves them. The Bransens finish and are excited because their clue tells them to go to Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park. They will have to watch the geyser erupt (which happens about every 90 minutes) before they get their clue.

Rebecca and Rachel, the horsewomen in the family, will take the roadblock for the Weavers. Linda says that they’re in their element. Rebecca and her father were supposed to participate in a “cattle-pinning” tournament (I think that’s what she said) but never got to. The Pink Ladies pass their turn and Sharon, who’s driving, sends Michelle and Christine out to the road to help her back up. She doesn’t do well with their help, though, and proclaims the task “impossible.”

Fortunately, help is on the way in the form of a passing motorist. The sisters call the driver “search and rescue.” He helps them turn around and they get on their way. The sisters pass the Bransens as they leave the ranch and Michelle notes that the Bransens have a definite lead. Rachel and Rebecca are doing well with the cows, and finish pretty quickly. The Weavers pass the Pink Ladies on their way out. Sharon and Michelle take the roadblock. Michelle’s horse starts out slow, then takes off suddenly.

On the way out of the ranch, the Weavers spot the Linzes approaching on the same road. They refuse to get out of the way and when the two cars pull up next to each other, Linda tells Tommy harshly that they’re supposed to yield (pardon the pun) to those leaving. “I apologize,” Tommy says. Once they’re all on their ways, the Weavers declare the Linzes “icky” and the Linzes declare the Weavers “rude.”

Sharon and Michelle herd cattle. They’re done before the Linzes reach the clue box. They pass the Pink Ladies and ask where the Bransens are. They’re not thrilled to learn that the Bransens are already done. The Pink Ladies, however, are happy not to be in last place. Tommy and Alex take the roadblock for the Linzes and are done so quickly that I almost didn’t have time to figure out which two were doing it. They announce that they need to get back in this.

The Bransens arrive at Yellowstone and meet up with a fireman. They’re told that they’ll have about a 30-40 minute wait before the next eruption. The Weavers check to make sure they’re going in the right direction and wind up with another map. The Bransens are worried that Old Faithful won’t erupt before another team arrives. I think they jinxed themselves because the Weavers show up. The Bransens wonder why the Weavers don’t see them. Linda approaches the fireman and asks him to take them to the geyser. He politely tells her that they’re already there. Linda asks if the Bransens are waiting around. Well… yes. You can’t just will the geyser to erupt. It erupts on a schedule. Hence the name Old Faithful. Wally tells the Weavers that they really lucked out.

The Pink Ladies are nearing the park with the Linzes on their tail. Old Faithful erupts and the Pink Ladies see it from the road. They realize that they’re going to have a long wait before they can leave. The Bransens and Weavers get the next clue, which tells them to find a ranch off of 287. The Bransens aren’t happy that the Weavers caught up to them. Linda tells Rebecca to follow the Bransens, who are good with directions. The Bransens pass the Pink Ladies and give them directions to the geyser. The Linzes approach and note that it’s not a good sign that the Weavers and Bransens are just leaving. The Weavers hope that the Linzes have to wait.

Tricia greets the firefighter, “Hi, Mr. Firefighter!” That cracks me up for some reason. He warns that they’ll have a long wait. The Linzes arrive next, thinking that this is an elimination leg. The Pink Ladies joke that they’ll trip the Weavers on the way to the pit stop. The geyser erupts and everyone enjoys it for about two seconds before getting the clue. They note that the clue tells them to look for Phil. In their car, the Linzes point out that the clue doesn’t say anything about a pit stop. “Very weird,” Tommy (I think) says in a German accent.

The Bransens are still upset about the Weavers being on their tail. They should probably stop worrying about that and just focusing on, you know, running faster than them. Indeed, both families are talking about outrunning each other. The Bransens think they can outrun Rebecca and Rachel. Rolly tells his family that he’ll “take out” Wally while the others run ahead of the Bransen girls. Both families get ready to run. Phil is sitting on a fence like he’s waiting to watch a pretty sunset. The Bransens and Weavers run like crazy. Rolly is ahead of the pack. Lindsay or Lauren falls, but the Bransens manage to all pile on the mat first. Yay! Except it doesn’t matter. This isn’t a pit stop – the leg isn’t over. To be continued…

Next week: Tepees. Christine balances some Pink Ladies on her shoulders. The Weavers get pulled over by cops. Awesome.

Why in the world would you admit, on NATIONAL TELEVISION, that you failed math not only once, but TWICE?? If I had (and obviously I haven't) I would not be proud to admit that to the world.
