When did the idol decline begin?

hi guys,
Was talking today to someone about Idol and how the last few seasons didn't even feel like the same show. IMO Idol's biggest mistake was when they stopped putting the spotlight on the contestants and started focusing more on the judges. Most of their most successful contestants were found during Seasons 1-7. When the show began Simon and Randy were basically unknown and the show really centered around the contestants. Towards the end I really found myself missing the feeling of really feeling like I knew who the contestants were. The feeling of watching them grow and mature was missing and the "Idol moments" felt less special to me if Idol erre to ever come back, I'd love them to return to the way the show was, if they can. Sorry to rant, just a random thought.
