We're Going to see King Tut!!

I am so excited... the King Tut exhibit will be in Dallas this fall, and I just got word today that the funding I requested to take my four classes to see the exhibit has been approved!!!

It's a great opportunity in general.. but I teach in an area with 85% of our kids "at risk" (low socio-economic, high dropout rate).  There is very little chance that the majority of our kids would NEVER see something like this...

I can hardly wait until fall (and I've only been out of school a week!)  I keep thinking of that little guy in second grade who kept asking me "When ARE we going to learn about Ancient Egypt because I really want to learn how to read hieroglyphics" (he's 7!)  Well, he's about to get his chance!!

This is gonna be AWEsome.. Cheesy

OK.. here's my new idea... chicken mummies (my room is gonna be so gross!).  You take chickens (like from the grocery store, already dead and cleaned) - wash them and pack them in ziploc bags with salt.. as the salt becomes damp you dump it and put in new salt... until you get a mummified chicken (about six weeks it said on the site where I saw this).  Then you rub them with oil and spices, wrap them, make them a sarcophagus (out of a box) and bury them.  Dig them up at the end of the school year to see how the process preserves the chicken.

A lady at the bookstore yesterday suggested I also bury just a raw one and dig it up also, so they see the difference - how the unmummified one begins to decay and the others remain the same... I may try that and see what happens..

I can just see my principal now when I start creating a necropolis on the playground... complete with pyramids.. LOL

I stopped reading here because it started to sound delicious. lol

Isn't there a myth about how pyramids preserve stuff? Maybe you can also do an experiment about it.

Yesteach, you got some really cool ideas there. My teachers could never come up with something so brilliant.

The rest of the ideas - we're doing a study of Egyptian gods and goddesses and the mythology and then the student will write myths.

We're also going to at the same time be doing seasons/night sky/astronomy in science (depending on the age level - I have 6-10 year olds.).  I have sky charts of the northern and southern hemisphere.  One of my student's parents (she also teaches at one of our other schools) suggested we do an overnight camping trip with binoculars and telescopes and let them actually find the constellations.  We're going to be "ancient scientists" and use either actual observation or star charts to name our own constellations (sort of do it yourself dot-to-dot - what can you find?)

I figured this is a once in a lifetime teaching opportunity - carpe diem!

That's a good way to teach and learn history. Here, all we do is memorize the textbook. *yawns* It's why I enjoy reading history, but I loathe history exams.
