Wacky Wanda Talks about the First 5!

Wacky Wanda Shirk has shared her thoughts on the first 5 episodes of Survivor: Fiji with us.  Thanks Wanda!
- MS

As we all know, life is full of zillions of wonderful things to do.  I've been busy doing some of the other zillions and haven't written anything on Survivor Fiji, but so many people have inquired about my thoughts, that with March Madness interrupting the viewing schedule this week, I thought I'd take the extra hour (though I'd already really lost it anyway, with Daylight Savings Time coming in last weekend!) and just make a few comments on S-14 so far:

Overall: The "haves" vs. "have-nots" is really pretty pathetic.  Reminds me of the reputation sociology has always had:  "the study of the obvious."  Did anybody think that people who are starving and can't sleep well would be able to beat people who are well-fed and well-rested?   We all hate seasons in which one tribe consistently beats the other, so it will be great to move beyond this stage soon and get to a mix-up and merge that ends the predictability.  It's also such a bummer for any participant to be on a losing tribe, such that one's shot at the one-and-six-zeros is diminished by incalculable percentages by twists and the fate of being on the wrong tribe rather on the basis of the strength and personal skills one brings to the game.

Pineapples:  Just a little observation -- they were on the ground, not in trees, right?  So okay, like the bamboo used for flooring and structure of shelters in many seasons, they were "planted," I think, and not by squirrels burying nuts.  That was one nice (and possibly necessary) gift to the poverty-stricken Ravu before they got their flint for fire/water.

Women:  All of the first five tribal councils have evicted women!  Although no one set this up to be boys-against-the-girls, Survivor has never before seen such an opening attack on the distaff.  We still have a couple tribal councils to go before the merge, and we are already down to only four females.  Given the brazen unkindness of Lisi and Stacy, these gals have few but their hometown fans left, with most of us wishing they'd get the next two boots.  That would leave only two women on the jury!  Cassandra, on the other hand, has been a sweetie and is winning the sympathy vote; we hope to see her last long.   Some really good women got taken out prematurely.  I grieve power-girl Lili's departure and fault the wicked step-sisters Lisi and Stacy for taking her out simply because she was stronger and better -- in short, a threat to them.   I also have twinges of sadness for architect Sylvia who also was taken out more because of her brains and leadership than because of a true lack of people-skills or physical skills.  She was fighting an uphill battle all the way, and she gave it her best shot.  Michelle is still a little UTR for me, so among the women, it's GO CASSANDRA!

Meanwhile, the men will soon have to be looking at each other, and the most annoying will probably go first.

Ravu Men:
Rocky:  What is this, a Shane-Judd wannabe?  Stone the Rock!
Mookie:  Okay; need to see more.  Strong-silent type?  But not strong enough to whip Moto challengers.
Anthony:  I'm glad he hasn't been taken out.  There's a good spirit there, in a couple of ways.  Honest, sincere, has the don't-quit spirit.  I just like him.
Yau-Man:  Warms my heart.  Sweet, good, knowledgeable; small bod- big smile.  Cute and funny.   A keeper!  Age 54 -- I do love to see older players who can hang in there!  They bring something special.  Fav scene:  Checkin' out Sylvia's carry-bag for the idol!  He's a player!  Final four, I hope.
Earl:  He's the leader, deserves to go far.   Decent, smart, yeah -- the Captain.  Gracious; protective.  Deserves to find the idol, and maybe he will.  He gave Yau-Man first shot at it.   Final two, I hope.

Moto Men:
Gary:  Very sad.  "Slip'n'slide" was not a good game for him.  As the saying goes, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall."  Gary gave 100% in challenges, and won his round in pig-snout eating even when he wasn't feeling well.  We all know Gary was the only person this season who was cast based on an audition tape rather than having been recruited, so lots of us were really rooting for "Papa Smurf," and we believe he would have gone far if the wrong type of challenge for the big guy hadn't sidelined him.  Huge bummer.  He was and is loved.
Boo:  Lackluster.  Besides being injury-prone, he hasn't stood out as a leader.  He's dispensable -- but Lisi and Stacy go first, please, Moto.
Dre/Dreamz:  There are things I like about this kid!  I liked his "snakes" speech when the tribe had to go to TC.  I like that basic desire to be decent, up-front, and not back-stabbing.  Unpolished, he's a diamond in the rough.  Clueless about alliance-building, but has the kind of basic goodness that makes you want to big-brother him.
Edgardo:  Nice guy, but playing second-fiddle to Alex, who's the real leader.
Alex:  Now here's smart and heart in one package.  Glad to see someone step up at Moto and speak out against the ostracism of Dreamz and Cassandra.  Even though he had to try to explain it to the others, especially the evil step-sisters, in terms of their own self-interest, we see Alex as the kind of good, decent person who wouldn't stand for mistreatment of others even if strategy weren't involved.  Hope he wins.

Under-analyzed:  We might also keep in mind that although this Survivor wasn't set up initially to highlight "four races" by initial tribe set-up, the "four races" were part of casting again.  How are they fairing?
White:  One pre-game drop out, one medical drop-out, Jessica voted out first.  Remaining:  Boo, Lisi.   Not favored.
Hispanic:  Lili and Rita voted out, one from each tribe.  Remaining:  Rocky, Edgardo, Alex.  Could win.
Black:  Erica out at 18 (same as Jolanda in Palau, and they are from the same sorority).
Remaining:  Cassandra and Dreamz, the outcasts of Moto, and Earl and Anthony, great Ravu bros.
Asian:  Sylvia:  good but gone; Remaining - Stacy, Michelle, Mookie, and Yau-Man.

Is race a factor?  I think it contributes to a brotherly feeling between Earl (age 35) and Anthony (age 32), and perhaps to a similar brotherly feeling between Alex and Edgardo (both 2Cool on their respective tribes.  Other than that, the game continues to prove that ethnic and racial background is a relatively minor factor compared to personality and character.

Wednesday, March 21, we resume......   re-zoom....... vroom, vroom.......  can't come too soon...
(Spring begins that day too!  Happy Trails!)

There are only 10 types of people in the world... those who understand binary, and those who don't.
